Riches only played a handful of senior games for North, which he joined in 2019 after a contract fight with North Shore that he eventually won via appeal through AFL Victoria.
Clunes coach Johno Leoncini said Riches would be used as a utility with the Magpies.
"He was originally captain of North Shore two years ago.. so he comes with a lot of good leadership and those great qualities," Leoncini told The Courier.
Leoncini also confirmed the return of past players Josh and Ryan Thompson, who are back after a year away at Avoca. The twins never played a game for the club due to the abandonment of the 2020 season.
Ryan is a forward/midfield option for Clunes, while Josh often plays through the backline.
Those three loom as the most promising of the recent additions to the 2020 list which was bolstered by players like Alex Bowd, Jonny Fazio and Tom Clarke, who were set to play last year.
Clunes has been fixtured to take on Creswick at home in round one of the new campaign on April 17.
