The magnitude 3.6 quake rocked the district just before 8am today, particularly around the Stawell/Ararat area.
According to Geoscience Australia, the earthquake was recorded at Glenorchy, near Stawell at 7.58am.
On the Stawell-Times News Facebook page, people reported feeling the ground shake for at least 10 seconds.
"Shook whole house, for 10 seconds at least ....I'm still shaking!!" posted Estele Hirst.
"(It) was scary as didn't know what to do grabbed my 1 week old daughter and held her for dear life," wrote Jess Scarlett-Lee Bell.
Another user said it "sounded like a freight train".
There are even reports of the quake being felt as far away as Ballarat, according to the Geoscience Australia website.
Twitter user @booksfuturama posted they felt the ground shake briefly in Ballarat for about one second.
More than 100 people have already reported feeling the tremor on the website.
The State Emergency Service did not receive any calls for assistance.
"This 3.5 magnitude earthquake has been felt across a fairly wide area, from Horsham to Ararat, around the Victorian goldfields, as well as the Wimmera-Mallee and Grampians. VICSES, thankfully, has not had to respond to any calls for assistance," said VICSES Regional Agency Commander Andrew Murton.
"The bulk of felt reports, according to Geoscience Australia, have been in Stawell, where we saw 75, and Ararat, where there were 32 reports."
