Both victims were taken to hospital with injuries from the assaults committed by 27-year-old Trewin Gow.

Gow, who was 26 at the time of the offending, pleaded guilty to home invasion, armed robbery, threatening to inflict serious injury and assault with the intention to avoid apprehension.

He appeared via video link from custody for the hearing at the County Court of Victoria on Wednesday.

Crown prosecutor Temple Saville said Gow drove with three co-accused to a house in Mount Helen in December 2019 and parked behind the victim's car in the driveway.

The victim opened the door when he heard a knock and Gow and two others entered the house.

One co-accused grabbed the victim's car keys, ran outside and got into the car, when the victim followed and grabbed the keys back and locked himself in the house.

Gow and the two other men broke through the door and re-entered the house.

Gow hit the victim with a beer bottle he was holding and fought with the victim.

The offenders left the house after grabbing the victim's keys again. They had lost their own car keys, so got into the victim's car.

One co-accused reversed the car into the car they had parked behind, ramming it out of the way.

There was a police pursuit until the offenders stopped in Sebastopol where Gow fled into a residential property and was chased by a police officer.

Ms Saville said Gow turned to the police officer after he had failed to jump a fence and punched him in the ribs in a stabbing motion, saying 'I have got a knife' and 'I will stab you'.

Gow attempted to run away again when he got through a gate but the police officer tackled him to the ground.

Gow punched the officer to the face and continued to attempt to escape by punching him in the face three or four times while the officer tried to handcuff him.

The court heard Gow appeared to calm down and said 'I give up', so the officer radioed for backup, but Gow got up and started to fight the officer and punch him again, hitting his head.

The police officer suffered scratches to his legs, arms and torso, had trouble breathing after Gow was arrested and was taken to hospital for assessment.

He did not receive stab wounds

The victim of the home invasion was also treated in hospital for lacerations and injuries to his face.

The court heard Gow knew the victim.

Police conducted a search of the area the next morning and found a knife in the horse paddock where the fight happened.

Defence barrister Daniel McGlone said this was a significant escalation of Gow's offending behaviour, in line with his increasing methamphetamine use.

He said Gow's drug use had derailed his relationship with his family and his ability to be employed.

"It is said in the record of interview that someone in the car had a problem with the victim," Mr McGlone said.

"They act on that during a night they had been drinking. My client instructs his meth use was heavy, he had a number of days without sleep and he had lost his employment."

Mr McGlone said Gow entered an early plea of guilty and was remorseful.

He submitted Gow required treatment through a community corrections order for his mental health issues and drug use.

"Him being offence free depends on him being drug free," Mr McGlone said.

Ms Saville submitted a non-parole period was appropriate as this was a serious example of this type of offending.

"Specific and general deterrence ought to be given weight," she said.

"This type of offending is prevalent."

Gow has spent more than a year in custody. He will return to court for sentencing in February.
