Phantoms Volleyball Club is drawing on talent from across regional Victoria as it finalises its teams for the upcoming state league season.
Part of this process is a first set of trials being run at the sport's Ballarat base at the Minerdome on Saturday.
The Phantoms are the only non-metropolitan club in the competition's premier divisions - allowing it to bring together players from centres across regional Victoria, including Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Horsham and Mildura .
They have secured one of eight three-year licences to be part of the Victorian Volleyball League from this season.
Phantoms secretary Damon Minotti said there would be no shortage of opportunities for players.
The Phantoms will have men's and women's firsts and seconds in the premier league - a condition of having a licence - and at least four men's and women's teams in the reserves league.
Minotti said the final number of teams would be determined by how many players it had.
Each team requires 10 players.
Minotti said as well as attracting new talent, the trials provided an opportunity for coaches, players and officials to touch base with each other after limited chances over the past year after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the state league.
He said after a year off, 2021 was shaping as a significant return for the sport.
Phantoms finished sixth with six wins in the men's premier league in 2019 and fifth with five wins in the women's division. Each competition had eight teams.
There will be four trial sessions:
Female: 10am-noon, 2pm-4pm
Male: noon-2pm, 4pm-6pm.
A second round of trials will be held in Horsham in readiness for state league beginning on Saturday, April 10.
Meanwhile, Ballarat's domestic season begins on Monday, February 10, with Minotti highlighting this was an ideal place for newcomers to the sport to get involved.
Volleyball Ballarat is planning to this year celebrate its 50th anniversary after having to postpone it last year.
A special function was planned to coincide with the annual Ballarat skins tournament in November.
Ballarat Volleyball Association began in late 1969 with a social competition.
The Association wad formally formed in 1970, with the first structured competition starting at the Ballarat YMCA in Camp Street, in the central business district.
