Firefighters responded to reports of a smell of gas about 110 metres below ground about 10.40am.
Two Country Fire Authority units attended the scene off Woolshed Gully Drive, with support from Fire Rescue Victoria.
Victoria Police was also called to the scene, with Ambulance Victoria on standby.
A spokesperson for the Ballarat Gold Mine said after an employee smelled the gas, all safety procedures were followed until the company was given the all clear.
Nobody was injured and the incident was declared under control about 11.40am.
It follows an earlier gas leak in Lucas this morning.
