Leading at one stage in the second quarter by 12 goals, even taking an eight goal lead into half time, it seemed like the Super Netball champions were well in control of the pre-season encounter.
But a second-half lapse in concentration, coupled with a new-found intensity from their opponents nearly allowed for the most of unlikely of comebacks for the Thunderbirds.
In the end, the Vixens held on by one goal, 51-50 in an enthralling encounter in front of a strong crowd at the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre, christening the new stadium in the perfect way for the home side.
Head coach Simone McKinnis said the start had been an improvement on previous pre-season games this year, but the next step would be to maintain it for the full 60 minutes.
"That ability to maintain it through the whole game is the next step," she said. "The Thunderbirds worked really well and their defence was very strong in the second half.
"We had to work hard for it, so it was a good win in the end."
McKinnis said converting turnovers needed to improve in coming matches.
"It's been a really good experience, particularly the first half was a really good contest on the ball.
"The overall objective is about the development of the team, finding the right combination is what is required in a hard game such as this."
McKinnis said getting a chance to play in front of a Victorian crowd again was outstanding for the club.
"When we walked in and had a look I was saying to the other coaches, 'this is such a really nice stadium and it has a great feel to it'. And now I can say I love it because we've had a win."
The Vixens and the Adelaide Thunderbirds clash again on Sunday from 12 noon.
