The intersection is one of several identified as requiring desperate upgrades, and was funded as part of an election promise in 2018.
According to a state government media release, work to build the traffic lights will begin next week, April 19.
It's estimated construction will take about four months.
The release states the new lights will be synchronised with the existing Howitt Street lights, and the level crossing, to prevent delays - about 30,000 vehicles travel through the intersection every day, it adds.
Gregory Street West was recently reopened to traffic as a through-way to Ring Road, providing another east-west connection north of Sturt Street, however the western end of the road has been criticised as being unsafe following several collisions.
The other five intersections in the "Keeping Ballarat Moving" project, as well as Gillies Street, are also under way, with preliminary works completed.
According to the state government, the next two priorities are replacing two Wiltshire Lane roundabouts with traffic lights, one at the Glenelg Highway in front of the Delacombe Town Centre, and one at Latrobe Street.
Construction at Latrobe Street is expected to begin in mid-to-late May and take around 10 months to complete, weather permitting.

Pre-construction works, including the relocation of essential services such as gas, water and power, are nearing completion at the intersection of the Glenelg Highway and Wiltshire Lane.
These works will prepare the site for major construction, which is expected to begin in mid-2021.
Exploratory digging has been conducted at the remaining sites in order to map the location of essential services.
These include replacing the Hertford Street roundabout on the Midland Highway in Sebastopol with traffic lights; redesigning the city's southern entrance with a roundabout and more lanes at Docwra Street, and building a roundabout at the busy Dyson Drive and Carngham Road intersection.
Regional Roads Victoria is continuing to finalise timeframes for the delivery of these projects and will keep the community informed closer to the start of construction, according to the state government.
IN THE NEWS
"The installation of these new traffic lights will ensure that everyone has a safer and easier journey through this busy Gillies Street intersection as our city continues to grow," Wendouree MP Juliana Addison said in a statement.
In separate projects, traffic light installation works are continuing on Sturt Street, at Morrison and Russell streets and at Raglan Street.
There is no word on when Lydiard Street's level crossing will reopen to traffic.
