Mercator Gold, a subsidiary of British company ECR, has applied for a new tenement surrounding Creswick.
If approved, this won't mean the company can begin mining - it will be strictly for exploration works only.
Director and geology manager Adam Jones said maintaining a good relationship with residents would be key if the application is approved.
"It's really just boots on ground, non-destructive techniques looking at soils and chemistry," he said.
"It's knowledge of the geology as well, and how the rocks are formed and folded - from an environmental point-of-view, it helps us understand the lay of the land, so to speak.
"Someone could come along and say, can we get your soil data to see what tree species grow on these hills - there are other benefits to be used in the future."
Details of the application available online note a strict environmental management strategy, and a community engagement strategy.
Objections and comments can be made to Earth Resources until May 5.
