Cooney-Cross attended Ballarat High School and previously played for the Red Devils, which later became Ballarat City.
The 19-year-old returned to Melbourne Victory for the 2020 W-League season for what turned out to be a remarkable campaign.
The striker scored directly from a corner kick in the 120th minute of extra time to win the grand final for her side.
Watch Cooney-Cross' grand final heroics below.
Cooney-Cross has previously represented Australia at a junior level and, in 2019, was named as a standby player for the Matildas' FIFA Women's World Cup squad.
The young gun will join the national set-up alongside some of the world's best, including Chelsea phenom Sam Kerr.
Cooney-Cross' chances of featuring in the friendlies are bolstered by the omission of Australia's all-time top-scorer, Lisa de Vanna.
New Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson had high hopes for his squad.
"I believe this group of players bring together some excellent qualities, and I am really looking forward to seeing how they can come together," he said.
"The focus of this camp will be on preparing ourselves for the opponents we will meet in 50 days. It is why we have chosen tough opponents in Denmark and Sweden. We need to observe, in a challenging environment, if the players called up can assist us in executing game plans that can be successful in July."
The squad will travel to Europe next week and will be reduced to 18 for the Tokyo Olympics.
The Matildas are grouped alongside world champions USA, 2016 silver medallist Switzerland and New Zealand, with their first match against their Trans-Tasman rivals on July 21.
