Police said the officer on call was driving along Sebastopol-Smythesdale Road in Smythesdale when he swerved to avoid a kangaroo on the road and crashed into a pole about 5pm.
Emergency crews, including police, CFA crews, SES units and PowerCor workers rushed to the scene.
The male officer, aged in his 40s, sustained upper body injuries. An air ambulance landed near the scene and transported him to a hospital in Melbourne in a stable condition.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The car was extensively damaged, with the crash also creating an instant traffic hazard. Live power lines and a tree fell across a section of road which included a blind corner in a 100km/h speed limit zone.
The Courier understands the tree also caught fire after contact with the power lines.
About 80 homes at Ross Creek, Smythesdale and Smythes Creek lost power due to the incident with service expected to be restored later tonight.
