WATERFALLS must be among Mother Nature's splashiest displays and if you want to appreciate this spectacular cascade in all its glory, winter is the best season to do so.
The Ballarat and Daylesford regions are home to some beautiful waterfalls, most notably Lal Lal Falls and Trentham Falls.
Lal Lal Falls is about 20 minutes from Ballarat and has an impressive drop of water into a large rocky gorge, best appreciated from the viewing platform.
Plan to visit after a good downpour, as this waterfall is notoriously seasonal.
See the waterfall map here.
Trentham Falls is just outside the town of the same name, a 20-minute drive from Daylesford. At 32 metres high, Trentham Falls boasts the tallest unbroken drop of water in Victoria.
To the west of Ballarat, the Grampians is also famous for a bevy of beautiful waterfalls, such as MacKenzie Falls and Silverband Falls.
As well as waiting for that inevitable dump of rain, ensure you do some research before you leave home to ensure you get the most out of your visit.
A fun day out is Goldfields Shire's Six Waterfall Challenge, a self-guided quest to visit six waterfalls (it's roughly a 2.5 hour-drive around the entire circuit) in the region. Pack your parka and a picnic and you're guaranteed a memorable road trip.
Also worth visiting is the Facebook page named Victoria's waterfalls, where members post images, information and personal observations of waterfalls they've visited throughout the state.
This is particularly helpful for up-to-date details on how active waterfalls are at any given time of the year, as well as available access.
The terrain surrounding waterfalls can be treacherous, so it's important to always stick to designated tracks and don't risk the safety or you or anyone else in the pursuit for that perfect photo. Happy gazing!
