Former Ballarat Clarendon College student Lucas Hamilton may have seen his Olympics dream fade merely days after being called up to the Australian cycling team.

The 25-year-old abandonded the Tour de France overnight after separating his AC joint in a nasty crash on stage 13 that sent a number of riders tumbling down a steep slope on the side of the road.

Hamilton tried to continue before later succumbing to his injuries, alongside Team BikeExchange teammate Simon Yates.
The Ararat native was assessed by the Tour de France medical team with x-rays showing an acromioclavicular joint dislocation.
"It is devastating for Lucas and Simon; everybody knows how much hard work the boys put in to prepare for the biggest race of the year," Team BikeExchange head sports director Matt White said.
On Wednesday it was announced Hamilton would replace Cameron Meyer in Australia's men's road race team at Tokyo.
There was no news what the latest setback will mean for a maiden Olympic Games.
The men's road race is scheduled for July 24.
