That's the choice being offered to Ballarat with the City of Ballarat wanting to hear from locals.
The council will consider the new entertainment options with an online survey launched this week to gauge public opinion.
The online survey stated the annual fireworks display at the lake usually costs about $38,000 for a 15-20 minute show.
However, the option of a sound and light show would cost about $250,000.

The council said there are four options for a light show or fireworks, a January summer show, in March for the Begonia festival or Harmony Fest, or in December for a Christmas event.
It does not appear council will hold either fireworks or a light show on Australia Day.
The survey stated the date options were chosen based on seasonal weather impacts, as fireworks do not work in rain, as well as aligning the show with existing events.
The change of date comes after the council moved away from organising celebrations on Australia Day.
IN THE NEWS:
After years of debate, the council decided in December of last year that the January 26 fireworks show would be moved to an alternate date, as a gesture of reconciliation and inclusion of the Indigenous community.
The council has proposed to replace the fireworks event with an "intercultural celebration, featuring live music and performances."
Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said the council had committed to planning activities for an Australia day event that would promote understanding, respect and reconciliation.
The survey on the choice between fireworks or a light show will run until July 30.
People can have their say on the future of the fireworks at here.
