Trains have now resumed on the Ballarat line following a fault that affected most of the state's regional rail network.
V/Line trains were replaced by coaches on all lines this morning due to a power fault in Melbourne's CBD which affected the operator's communications systems.
Services resumed across the network about 10am this morning, but V/Line said possible further cancellations and delays were anticipated as the network recovers and some services would be replaced by coaches.
Passengers on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines have been advised to defer non-essential travel with limited trains departing from Ballarat and Ararat.
Four coaches were dispatched to Ballarat to run between Ballarat and Southern Cross with another five dispatched to Deer Park, four to shuttle between Ballarat and Sunshine and one to run between Ballarat and Deer Park.
EARLIER, 7.30AM:
V/Line has asked passengers to defer all non essential travel.
A fault is causing major delays to V/Line services, including trains on the Ballarat line.
The train operator said they are currently trying to source as many coaches as possible but due to limited availability, many services may not have coaches arranged for the next 90-120 minutes.
"We apologise for this disruption to your travel this morning," they said.
No trains are running on the Ballarat line and there have been just three coaches dispatched.
Trains are currently not running on the Bendigo, Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Echuca, Shepparton and Gippsland.
"Due to a power fault in the CBD which has affected communication to and from the V/Line Operations Centre as well as rail equipment faults on the Bendigo and Traralgon lines, coaches will replace some trains on all lines," V/Line said in a social media post.
