It turned out to be a costly theft of crutches and a canvas print for accused man Robin Thame, who was fined $600 at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The court heard the 66-year-old drove to the back of St Vincent de Paul opportunity shop at 7am in March 2020 and loaded the items into his car with two co-accused.
Magistrate Ron Saines said Thame was lucky he was not also charged with burglary for being on their premises.
"It is embarrassing to be honest," Thame said.
"So it should be," Mr Saines responded.
Thame said he lived in Sebastopol, had ongoing health issues and was on the disability pension.
Mr Saines said Thame had been convicted of dishonesty offences before, but it was more than 25-years-ago.
Thame was convicted and fined $600.
He was ordered to pay $85 in court costs.
