The street has been closed at the level crossing since May 2020, following a train crash.
Public submissions are being sought as part of the heritage application, which will eventually lead to the interim removal of the replica swing gates and posts, and their safe storage in Wendouree.

In a separate process, V/Line will be installing temporary boom gates to facilitate opening the road.
Any changes to a state heritage listed place requires a permit from Heritage Victoria.
The temporary gates will be installed outside of the heritage registration area so no approval is required from Heritage Victoria.
IN THE NEWS
The permit application will be publicly advertised until August 11 on the Heritage Victoria website.
The state government, committing $10.5 million to the project in May, has previously said the street will be reopened by October.
Work to develop a permanent solution for the crossing that pays homage to the history of the Ballarat Railway Precinct is continuing.
