It has been a tough path for Werry, a 2010 Ballarat Associated Schools' Head of the Lake winner for College. Werry's Australian crew was forced to fight for a final spot via a repechage on Wednesday.
Ballarat Clarendon College teacher Jennifer McGie said the school community was exceptionally excited for what was possible for Werry - and incredibly proud to have her representing Australia in an Olympic Games.
"Kat's a very sincere, focused and really genuine young woman," Ms McGie said.
"She's a very committed team player. Rowing was a very important part of Kat's life here and we're very proud as a school we were able to support her pursuits. We're proud of her hard work and dedication in the years since she's left school."
MORE TOKYO CONNECTIONS
There is a strong College flavour in the Australian Olympic team. Former student Lucas Hamilton contested the cycling men's road race last weekend after a Tour de France campaign.
Fellow Collegian and middle-distance runner Stewart McSwain has been in stellar form building up to the Tokyo athletics program. McSwain is in action next week.
"Lucy Stephan's win was great for Ballarat. While we're thrilled to have three Old Collegians competing, it's about Ballarat celebrating Ballarat," Ms McGie said.
Werry's final in the women's eight is at 11.05am.
