The Ballarat Football Netball League has decided to end the home-and-away seasons in its senior, reserves and under-19 football competitions, as well as all ranks of netball from A Grade to 19-and-under.
The move is tough but understandable, with three of the league's clubs - Melton, Sunbury and Melton South - currently in lockdown until at least midnight on Thursday, August 19.
Plenty of players across the league also call Melbourne home and wouldn't have been able to travel to play.
With only one scheduled round remaining, there was also the threat of injustice if play went ahead.
Why would three clubs - North Ballarat, Melton and Ballarat - have one more bye than the rest of the competition, and lose four points on everyone else?
How would it be fair for only select clubs to get second meetings with lesser opponents?
BFNL general manager Shane Anwyl said calling the home-and-away season protected the legitimacy of the season.
"The integrity of the competition is there because everyone has played each other once," he said.
"It gives a true reflection of where every club is at compared to the competition."
The home-and-away season's end has been momentous for North Ballarat, the club clinching the minor premierships in seniors and A Grade.
There's also euphoria for East Point in the netball competition with all its senior sides qualifying for finals.
The Roos' C Grade, D Grade and E Grade outfits all claimed minor premierships, while the B Grade side finished second and the A Grade side third.
Check out how the BFNL home-and-away seasons finished below. The clubs capitalised will see their seasons continue. For the rest, here's hoping 2022 offers something resembling normality.
