Pateman will on Sunday attempt to train his first winner of the classic with Mapping lining up in the $350,000 Ecycle Solutions Grand National Steeplechase, 4500m, in Ballarat.
Pateman also won this event as a jockey on Liquid Lunch in 2005 and went back-to-back on the great Bashboy in 20212-13.
Mapping has been going over the fences for two years, with his only coming at Casterton in June last year.
He has had five starts this campaign - each in a steeplechase - with his best run being a second at Casterton in the third of those outings.
The Grand National has attracted a field of eight, with Social Element to carry the top weight of 69kg.
Amy McDonald and Henry Dwyer carry the hometown hopes with Flying Agent and Riding High respectively.
Ballarat Turf Club has programmed six jumps races, the first at 1pm, and with $125,000 Ecycle Solutions JJ Houlahan Hurdle, 3250m, and $50,000 Sportsbet Gotta Take Care Hurdle, 3600m, also featured.
