A 4-1 start to the 2021 Central Highlands Football League season was Clunes' best since 2005 and a far cry from the wooden spoon it won in 2019 and a one win 2018 season.

Its average winning margin of 34 points through these four wins was the most impressive aspect of the streak.

Winning scores of 78 and 97 in the first two games specifically highlighted a more potent Clunes' attack than in previous seasons.
A 1-5 finish to the season including some big losses was not the ideal way to end, however, the seeds have been planted for a winning future at Clunes.
Injuries hampered the Magpies in the second-half of the season, one reason they fell victim to some big defeats at the hands of Springbank, Buninyong and Rokewood-Corindhap.
Outgoing senior coach Johno Leoncini said the injuries affected his side the longer the season went on.
"That was the telling factor," he said.
"Our list at the start of the year wasn't a really big list, so when you start and we're playing well and we're winning games, you get one injury and it really hurts you.
"That's what happened to us.
"By the end of the season, we had five or six key players that were out injured."
Despite a poor end to the season, what the Magpies have to build on under a new coach is a core of senior players that helped drive the new look side to some impressive early season wins.
Clashes with Learmonth in round four and Newlyn in round 11 specifically were close games that could have gone either way and required the side to dig their heels in and fight for the four points.
The latter was especially impressive, fighting from behind in the mud and the wet to hold on against the Cats who were also fighting for a finals position late in the season.
Dominant wins over Creswick in round one and Ballan in round two were something Clunes' supporters had not seen in a long time, proof that the side is trending in the right direction.
For Leoncini, it was a year that provided plenty of positives.
"It was a good year for Clunes," he said.
"We certainly didn't hit what we wanted to hit in terms of our mission and statement.
"To have five wins as we did and to come out of the blocks early in the year and play a really good style and brand of footy was really pleasing.
"You'll go away (from) it saying it was a good year."
Off-season recruits Jonny Fazio, Alex Riches and Alex Bowd proved pivotal in Clunes' more successful season.
All three played every game for the Magpies this year, Fazio winning the side's goalkicking with 21 majors.
Brothers Ryan and Josh Thompson also returned to the club after some time with Avoca in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League.
They were strong contributors once again, playing nine and 10 games respectively.
Clunes remains on the hunt for a new senior coach after Leoncini stepped down at the conclusion of the season.
