Herman Hesse ($2.70 favourite) did what he had to do for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in taking out the $30,000 feature at Warracknabeal on Saturday.
The five-year-old was having just his second Australian start after a first-up third on the Ballarat synthetic track.
A two-time winner in England this time last year, Herman Hesse is among a big contingent of Caulfield and Melbourne Cups entries from the Maher-Eustace stable.
While he was getting the job done in the Wimmera, another cups nomination Tooradin ($2.10) kept his campaign ticking over in the right direction with a win in the Neds Handicap, 2400m, at Caulfield on Saturday.
The five-year-old has had three wins this preparation and his latest success came after three consecutive seconds on city tracks.
The two-state operation, including Ballarat's biggest stable, of Maher and Eustace has made flying start to the season.
Three wins on Saturday, including a Caulfield double, gives them 22 wins in Victoria.
This has them 10 clear of Ballarat's Tony and Calvin McEvoy, who have had 80 fewer starters.
Ballarat's John Allen is also prominent, leading the state and country jockey premierships as the first month of the season rounds out.
He will next get an opportunity to add to his tally with three rides at a Ballarat synthetic track meeting on Tuesday.
