Less afflicted with COVID cases, they have over twenty months enjoyed greater freedoms and the recognition that there are always others worse off.
It has also led to that renewed realisation that what we have in the regions is special and worth cherishing and protecting.
Many more who have never considered a life in the regions or perhaps grew up here and went onto bigger things abroad, now look back with wistful gaze and emerging plans.
This in part is fueling unprecedented growth in cities like Ballarat and no end of complexities and problems that The Courier will not shy away from examining and reporting on.
But it is also bringing the people in all their individual talent, energy and diversity and it is they who will ultimately help make its future.
Today we begin by looking at them. What drives and inspires them as individuals, so that by looking at them we may see something of ourselves, what we have and what we will be.
