The wooden trees, made from recycled pallets, have been a popular addition to the town's festivities over the past few years and this year around 40 trees will be available to design, decorate and sell at the Christmas pop-up shop in the Buninyong Town Hall.

Organiser Brigid Corcoran said while Christmas was still more than three months away she wanted to give artists plenty of time to create their merry masterpieces.

But it's not just open to artists - anyone who wants to can pay the $25 entry fee and decorate their tree, which will be sold at the pop up shop in early December. Twenty per cent of the sale price goes to the pop up shop which supports local charities, and artists retain the rest.

Judges from Buninyong Men's Shed, who make the blank trees, will judge the best. Last year's winner was Scotsburn Primary School who decorated their tree with items from nature which they spray painted gold.

"It's a real creative challenge," Ms Corcoran said. "I did one last time and it's a difficult canvas. You need time to study the canvas, have a play, change your mind ... and it's a good time to get hooked in to a new art project."

There have been painted trees, trees covered in crochet, and one that was filled with succulent plants.

Some of the 40 trees for the coming Christmas are already underway from artists who missed out on taking part last year.

The Buninyong Christmas pop-up shop will be held at the Town Hall From Friday December 3 to December 10, filled with products made by up to 50 local creatives and artists.

"We've done it for a few years now and it's about really driving local opportunities for people to buy for Christmas and buy from local makers," Ms Corcoran said.

"The Town Hall is a really good location and we just hope it brings a bit of festivity to town. Even if there are still restrictions, because it's not a market with stallholders behind their stalls, and because of the hall's capacity, even with the one person per four square metre rule we can still have 30 people shopping at once."
