Singapore's health ministry registered 2236 new infections on Tuesday and five related deaths that took September's pandemic fatalities to 30, the most in a month.

The new virus cases took the total to more than 90,000 and came a day after tighter restrictions came into force, with restaurant dining limited to two per table and people advised to again work from home.

The country had until last month avoided the spread of the Delta variant.

Singapore was planning ways to live with what the government said would become an "endemic" disease.

More than 24,000 cases have been confirmed over the past 28 days, the ministry said on Tuesday although nine in 10 reportedly have displayed mild symptoms or none.

The Statistics Department announced earlier on Tuesday that the wealthy city-state's population had dropped from about 5.7 million to 5.45 million over the 12 months up to June.

It attributed the fall to the pandemic and related restrictions causing a drop in foreign worker numbers.

Confirmed coronavirus-linked deaths in Russia hit another record at 852 on Tuesday.

Russia's state coronavirus task force reported the increase from the previous record of 828 on Friday.

Daily coronavirus infections in Russia have fallen from more than 20,000 in late August to about 18,000 in mid-September.

However, the numbers have started creeping up again.

Since last Thursday, the state coronavirus task force has been reporting more than 21,000 new cases a day.

On Tuesday, 21,559 new infections were registered.

Despite the increase, there are few restrictions in place in Russia, which had one six-week lockdown in the northern hemisphere's spring.

Vaccination rates have remained low, too, with only 32 per cent of the country's 146 million population having received at least one shot of a vaccine and only 28 per cent fully vaccinated.
