But in the coming weeks and months education authorities are hoping to minimise the need for entire schools to close following a COVID case.
Education minister James Merlino flagged changes earlier this month which would mean an individual class or year level would be required to isolate rather than the entire school, depending on the exposure.
"The Department of Health is working closely with the Department of Education and Training and individual schools to ensure that if there is a case on a school site, the public health risks are minimised while quarantining as few students as possible to keep schools operating," Mr Merlino said on Tuesday.
"We're constantly refining our contact tracing processes for schools ahead of exams to see as few students and staff as possible forced to isolate, and the success of the GAT has given us confidence in this work."
It is the second time Alfredton Primary School has had to close because of COVID in the past 20 months.
The recent relaxation of isolation rules for families of people potentially exposed to COVID-19 mean only the individual exposed is required to quarantine for 14 days.
IN OTHER NEWS
With regional students returning to classrooms at least part time from this week, the introduction of masks for children from grade three and up has also been implemented to stop the spread of the virus.
Schools have also introduced their own hand washing, sanitising and contact rules over the past 20 months which students will continue to follow when back in class, and teachers are encouraged to hold classes outdoors when possible.
Air purifiers and improved ventilation have also been introduced to reduce the risk, and one Melbourne school is introducing twice-weekly rapid antigen testing to its senior school.
