Showbiz Cinemas will bring the big screen back to the Ballarat Showgrounds with a three-month program.
The 'retro initiative' was first held in November 2020 when drive-in theatres became a popular iso-trend across the world.
Before this, Ballarat had not seen a drive-in cinema operation since the closure of the Southern Drive-In in 1991.
Showbiz group director Chris Jones is looking forward to providing the drive-in movie experience for a second year.
"We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring this concept back this spring and summer after continued difficult times for our community," Mr Jones said.
"We understand the reopening of the drive-in this season will be one of the first major events in Ballarat since the easing of restrictions and what better way to enjoy a social-outing, watching a movie on the big screen, whilst still being able to maintain physical distancing."
The season will kick off with classic drive-in movie Grease on Friday, November 5, followed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Saturday, November 6.
Other program line-ups include Mad Max Fury Road, Titanic, Back to the Future, Home Alone and Dirty Dancing.
Customers will be able to tune into the film's soundtrack via their FM radio in their cars, while a full candy bar with popcorn, choc top ice-creams and confectionery will be available.
BAPS executive officer Elizabeth van Beek said the initiative would be positive for the Ballarat community.
"Given the cancellation of many events including the Ballarat Show for a second year in a row, we are thrilled to again partner with a local cinema company to bring something positive, fun and entertaining to the community," Ms van Beek said.
John Bourke, who used to work both of Ballarat's previous drive-ins in the 1970s and 1980s has come on board again to assist with the operation.
"During these COVID times, we have seen many instances of drive-in theatres start to re-emerge. The notion of having the drive-in back up and running for a second season again in Ballarat is indeed very exciting," Mr Bourke said.
The drive-in theatre has been made possible through a partnership with Showbiz Cinemas and the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society.
To comply with a COVID-safe environment, all tickets are to be completed online. Given the anticipated popularity and capped number of vehicles permitted into the screening area, customers are encouraged to purchase early.
Tickets are now available via the website https://www.showbizcinemas.com.au/ballarat.
