Prosecutors have demanded a suspended jail sentence of 10 months and a fine of 75,000 euros ($A116,500) for the footballer, whose defence have asked for an acquittal.

Four other men have been on trial in the sex tape case since Wednesday.

The case dates back to June 2015. France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena was allegedly told in a phone call that an intimate video involving him would be published unless he paid money.

At the heart of the allegations against Benzema, who did not appear in court in person, is a private conversation between him and Valbuena about the sex video a few days after the call.

Benzema is alleged to have tried to persuade his team-mate to talk to a middle man. Money was not discussed but this was implicit, Valbuena has said.

Benzema was knowingly part of the extortion attempt, the prosecution say. His defence has denied the allegations.

The affair had major consequences for the duo. Benzema missed the 2016 European Championship in his own country and Valbuena did not play for the France team again.

Benzema finally returned for France ahead of Euro 2020.
