Police have not revealed many further details about the crash, however, have confirmed to The Courier that the man who died was a 41-year-old from Oakleigh.
There have been 10 lives lost across the Ballarat region in the last 12 months.
EARLIER, 6.45AM ON NOVEMBER 3:
The Melbourne Cup long weekend has ended in tragedy after a man was killed in a car crash near Creswick overnight.
Police say a a male driver died when the car he was driving hit a tree on Melbourne Road at Wattle Flat early on Wednesday morning.
A female passenger in the car was able to escape the crash and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred about 3.15am on Wednesday.
The cause of the crash is not yet known and police have not released any further information on the incident.
The ages of the people involved have also not been released.
