It was a nervous wait.

"I had a little bit of indication from Brisbane, my manager ... Tom Seccull rang me before the draft and said 'look, it's a small window that might happen tonight ...,'" Lohmann said.

"(I) was pretty nervous, I was waiting around just with the family, had (them) over ... Brisbane was getting read out at pick 20 and the family was a little bit nervous but we weren't really expecting it.

"When (I) got picked it took a little bit to sink in, but when (I) did we went off and we celebrated and it was a really, really special night."

It has been a whirlwind since his name was announced, Lohmann racing down to Marvel Stadium on Thursday for the AFL's media session.

He will have to wait until December 17 to head to Brisbane, however, when Queensland's boarder open.

Until then, Lohmann will continue training with some fellow draftees in the same situation, as well as at the RAD Centre and with the Rebels.

When he does arrive, he will join former Rebel and good friend Harry Sharp, as well as fellow former Rebels Jarrod and Tom Berry and Hugh McCluggage.

"It's obviously pretty cool having your best mate up in Brisbane waiting for you," Lohmann said.

"He was pretty excited, he was pretty emotional on the Face Time (Wednesday) night.

"It's going to be really welcoming going to a place where there's Ballarat boys already there waiting for me ..."

For mum Brooke, it took a little while for it to sync in that Lohmann had been selected.

"It keeps playing over in my head, but it was like 'oh, that's Kai's name,' and I sort of looked at one of my close friends and I was like 'that's Kai's name ...'" she said.

"It just took ... a couple of seconds to sync in that 'oh my god, he's been picked up and he's going to Brisbane.'"

Brother Jake was a late comer to the party but made his presence felt.

"Funny story, I was actually at Maryborough footy training, I thought Kai's probably not going to get drafted tonight, so I might as well go to footy training ..." he said.

"I've pulled up into the driveway and I've opened the car door and I've heard all this yelling and excitement ... I've slammed the car door, sprinted in the door and I realised he's just been picked up ... I just went straight to him and spear tackled him into the couch and grabbed him and hugged him ..."

Brisbane national recruiting manager Stephen Conole said Lohmann possess high level AFL traits.

"He is a very talented and competitive young player ..." he said.

"Kai has a great skill set to be an exciting player for the footy club ... he is extremely strong overhead for his size, has quick feet and an attacking mindset in the way he likes to play the game.''
