In a letter to the school community, Principal David Shepherd said the year 9 student attended school on Thursday, November 25 and returned a positive test on Monday, November 29.
"We can confirm that the student wore a mask while on campus," Mr. Shepherd said.
"Under the direction of the Grampians Public Health Unit and in accordance with current Department of Health and Department of Education and Training Guidelines, we have identified the 'education contacts' and will be communicating directly with those families and members of staff who need to get tested and isolate until a negative result is returned."
Mr. Shepherd said the college is confident its processes and will provide additional information if required.
"This is obviously an unsettling time, but particularly for this student and their family as they navigate the next few days, he said.
"We wish them a speedy recovery."
It comes as Ballarat recorded just one new COVID case in the 24 hours to midnight, Tuesday.
There are currently 25 active cases in the city.
