The first stage of the build commenced in March 2021 and was predicted to take around 16 weeks, it has just now - December 2021 - reached completion. Whilst it did take longer than expected, Stage 1 saw no major issues with 960 metres of pipe successfully installed beneath the CBD.
"Construction has included more than 13,000 tonnes of crushed rock compacted, two micro-tunnels bored beneath critical traffic intersections, 220m3 of concrete poured and three large sewer connections made into the existing network. A total of 22,000 working hours have been undertaken to complete Stage 1," said CHW Managing Director, Paul O'Donohue.
Stage 2 will take place between White Flat Oval headed south along Yarrowee River to the south of the Prest Street crossing of the river.
In an effort to maintain access to businesses and resident's homes, Project Manager, Mick Dwyer, states their main priority is to create the least interference possible.
"Residents should expect minimal disruption... microtunneling will occur to minimise the road disruptions, we're confident we'll be able to keep roads open," he said.
Microtunneling means that the construction is more sustainable and less interruptive - it is a trenchless process which makes laying pipelines in built up areas far more efficient.

The commitment to accessibility did somewhat slow the progress of stage 1 as they ensured at least one lane of the street stayed open to create traffic for the local businesses.
"We wanted to remain with a single lane at least open, and that meant at times we had to slow construction down, but we're happy to do that because the businesses have been fantastic," said Dwyer.
"The community spirit shown during construction, particularly during challenging COVID-19 times and severe weather events, has been greatly appreciated. The understanding shown by both our business community, and residents, have made a highly complex project achievable."
With wider roads and less essential linking streets throughout Stage 2, the sewer build should be able to maintain it's path to completion - but Stage 2 is still set to take 12-24 months until the project moves into its final stage.
The CHW is working to reline the sewerage system from 100 years ago whilst putting in place a second pipeline, hoping to ensure another 100 years of efficient sewerage for Ballarat residents.
