It left Melbourne 1-65 off 8.5 overs and helped Adelaide get on a roll and take 8-88 to hold the Renegades to 153 from their 20 overs.
Short then opened the batting alongside Jake Weatherald and smashed a quick-fire 29 runs from 18 balls.
His innings included one four and two second-deck sixes, helping Adelaide get off to a flying start.
Short led the Strikers to 0-45 from 4.2 overs before being dismissed by Zahir Khan.
Adelaide slowed from there, however still stood a chance to win in the last over.
It needed five runs from the last ball, a six would win it and a four would result in a tie and cause a super-over.
It managed just two and lost by two runs.
The two sides meet again on Thursday at Adelaide Oval from 7:15pm.
