Olympic Handball hits the target

Handball’s one of those funny European sports that most Aussies wouldn’t know existed if it didn’t pop up occasionally on TV during the Olympics.

Today I was lucky enough to watch the Hungarian women take on Brazil in what turned out to be a cracker.

Most of you would be familiar with the playground phrase, “you throw like a girl”, as a veteran of seven dislocated shoulders I would love to be able to throw like these chicks.

Brazil looked set to upset Hungary, thanks mainly to the 10 goals scored by Eduarda Amorim, until they gave away a free with just one second remaining on the clock, Brasil up 28-27.

Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Tomori calmly slotted it away to end the absorbing encounter all square.

A commentator described Hungarian Anita Gorbicz as the “pin-up” of the sport, combining super-model looks with all the skills of the game.

At one stage she dove full-length towards the goals and let rip a massive leg-break which spun past a diving goalie. I imagine Warney sent her a text message of approval afterwards.

The number of times the chicks clothes-lined each other should also have the punters salivating, and no game is complete without mad goalies who seem to love getting hit in the face by the ball.

Blogging of faces, has anyone else seen the Darth Vader masks that hockey players are wearing these days?

I mean, I’ve always wanted to be a Jedi as well but I think that’s taking it a little too far.

After an arvo on the couch, it was time to head out for a run, where I imagined myself to be Ballarat’s own Steve Moneghetti running the streets of Victoria, Canada, at the 94 Commonwealth Games on my way to gold.

Happy now Comrade Broat?

Do you realise the theme song "there's only one Tony Lockett" is the same tune as "One Tonne Rodeo" and "Guantanamerro" I know I have. PS Chairman Polks, today's Blog had too much sport and not enough apathy for my liking. Do you have Olympic Fever?

If "handball" is a sport why aren't the Sports Institute talent trawlers out combing the school yards for talent? Handball is HUGE at boy's schools ... okay maybe we call it four square but the skills are there ... hand eye co-ordination, fast foot work, creative acting when a call doesn't go your way. I think there is definitely untapped talent waiting to be discovered in the playgrounds of Australia ... all those kids who don't make the School First XI are potential gold medal winners in 2012.

Comrade Joanne, Handball is indeed a sport and one of the greatest sports at these Olympics. For information on Australian Handball visit www.handballaustralia.org.au. The Australians failed to qualify due to their results at the World Championships last year in Germany.

Comrade Broat, if that is your real name, once you have seen the beauty of women's Handball, you too will have the Olympic Fever.

I'm with you all the way here, David. Handball is my second favourite sport, behind only hurling. It is fast, tough & skilful. I wish we had more opportunities to watch it in Australia. Anita Gorbicz is a star. Her spinning goal was as good as Warnie's ball to Mike Gatting.

I've *never* seen handball on any Australian TV coverage of the olympics, even on SBS. I didn't even know the sport existed until I was lucky enough to get tickets to two women's handball matches at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Just goes to show how awfully jingoistic Australian coverage of the Olympics actually is- it's mind-boggling that sports like shooting and equestrian receive TV coverage but handball doesn't. It's probably the most exciting team sport at the Olympics, and yet we miss out.

Sarah, Check out the schedule section of the SBS website http://www.sbs.com.au/schedule. Get your handball fix this week, as we're unlikely to see it on TV again for another four years.
