 Parish rocked by abuse scandal

Parish rocked by abuse scandal

07 Aug, 2011 11:59 PM
THE evil of Robert Charles Best has cast a long shadow over East Ballarat, but there is one man who believes the hope of a community can outlive it.

Father Adrian McInerney, parish priest at St Alipius in Ballarat East, has spoken out about the damage and despair Christian Brother Best wreaked between 1969 and 1988.

Best will face court today to be sentenced on a range of charges relating to victims aged between seven and 13.

Victorian County Court Judge Roy Punshon has been asked to jail Best, now 70, for at least 16 years.

Best pleaded guilty in May this year to the charges, including aggravated buggery and aggravated indecent assault.

The offences were committed over 20 years at three different Catholic schools, including at St Alipius Christian Brothers school in Ballarat, St Leo’s Christian Brothers College at Box Hill and St Joseph’s College, Geelong.

From 1968 to 1973, Best taught at St Alipius, where he also acted as headmaster.

Fr McInerney said the news of the crimes had had an ongoing impact on the congregation. “There is a great sadness in the community but they don’t deny it,’’ he said

“The people of this parish are the collateral damage of this, and while that is nowhere near the damage that has been done to those who have been the victims of the abuse, it does hurt to the parish, to the church and in my opinion to all humanity.”

Fr McInerney said he found the news of the high number of suicides among Best’s victims particularly harrowing.

“We are only beginning to understand how radical this harm is to the human person,’’ he said “These people had lost all hope and that is so horrible.”

Fr McInerney said he recognised the ongoing pain and anger of victims, which was often directed at the Catholic Church in general. “I don’t think anyone can understand the pain unless they themselves are abused and that is why we have to bear the anger. But I would rather bear the anger than deny it or deny people’s right to feel hurt,” he said.

Fr McInerney said the damage of the abuse scandals had “undoubtedly” changed the public perception of the church and could test the loyalty of Catholics.

He said the congregation found it particularly frustrating that in media coverage of the abuse scandal in Ballarat, St Alipius school was confused with an earlier Christian Brothers’ school where Best’s crimes were committed.

“It was another school that no longer exists and people should know that our parish school had nothing to do with it.”

Even the priest fails to understand why there is so much angar directed at the church, Its because both the clergy and laity world wide Have told victims survivors to get lost, By their collective actions, Catholics across the world support those who have covered up the abuse and rape of children , But not the victims in a way they should be helped

One canot escape it is still part of the history of the parish school and, accordingly, should never be disowned or forgotten in honour of those whose lives have past and those who survive .

Morevoer, Ridsdale resided as Priest in this parish and shared in the horrific abuse with Best and others.

Bishop Connor's recent comments about the lack of understanding of appropriate and inappropriate behaviour in the past were astounding and shameful.

The article shows how the church at one level continues to distance itself to protect its image; further marginalizing those affected.

Why is it, that even though guilty, the Catholic church still spent a fortune on the defence of Robert Charles Best, and nothing has been done for the families and victims?? Although 1 Geelong news report has 1 victim being offered $2,000 and a 'move on' seminar. I ask again, WHY DID THE CHURCH PAY SO MUCH TO ASSIST BEST??.

It never stops it is everywhere - Bathurst, Newcastle, Marist Brothers.. etc and still no government inquiry. Why?

The comments made in the The Age last week by Bishop Peter Connors were sickeningly infuriating! He stated:"While conceding the abuse of children was wrong, in the past it had not always been clear to everyone what was inappropriate behaviour."

Therein lies the truth behind this endemic problem in the Catholic church! If a priest does not know that sexually abusing children is "inappropriate" then what hope is there? They knew exactly what they were doing to their innocent victims! It's sickening. They are criminals who deserve the full force of the law not the veil of the church

These crimes might have been commited a few hundred yards away from the present school; but the fact remains, Those in charge of The Catholic Church did their best to cover these evil crimes up.

Lost me forever.

If Fr McInerney was to do the right thing by his congregation he would be demanding that a government judical inquiry be undertaten. All preists and Bishop Denis Hart should come clean as to the nature and extent of the coverup that has devestated many thousands of lives and families not just Australia wide but world wide. If you have been abused do not despair seek help and report all cases (no matter how trivial or historcial they may seem) to the police. Visit www.snapaustralia.com for support group self help.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Carson has performed a major investigation into these offences. People who have no law enforcement experience or background in policing would have no idea of the amount of investigation required to investigate this type of offence. Mr. Carson has performed a magnificent feat and it is hoped that the sentencing Judge in the Melbourne County Court will make comment regardinf this work of Detective Sergeant Carson. Victoria Police should also be considering a major award for his role in this investigation. The people of Ballarat salute you Kevin.

@ Michael,

I couldn't agree with you more mate.

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing"

Good men did do something, and evil has not prevailed.

To Kevin Carson, and all members of law agencies fighting against child abuse, I thank you. You are all true hero's.
