After crashes, police issue black ice advice

BLACK ice caused havoc in several Ballarat streets yesterday morning, prompting police to issue a warning to drivers.Cars slid off the road in Elsworth, Eureka, Fussell and Victoria streets, Gear Ave, Woodmans Hill and the Western Hwy at Sulky between 6.30am and 9am.After hitting black ice and sliding off the road, a car crashed into a fence at the corner of Elsworth and Pryor streets.And a male driver had his car towed away after hitting black ice at Sulky Hill on the Midland Hwy at 6.30am.Creswick Police Senior Constable Jason Britt said the man hit an embankment after losing control of his car.There were no injuries in the incidents.There were also reports of black ice on Whitehorse Rd.Ballarat Police Sergeant Gary Drummond said drivers were not slowing down in the icy conditions. "Despite it being on the radio yesterday morning, people were still travelling in excess of the speed limit," Sgt Drummond said."People were not slowing down."Sgt Drummond said black ice could not be avoided in some instances, but other people were driving too fast."People need to drive to the conditions of the road, because black ice is very deadly," he said.He said people should reduce the speed limit by 20kmh to 30kmh in icy conditions and avoid braking.
