WHO would have thought graffiti artists would have wool as their weapon of choice? But artists from around Ballarat have pulled out the knitting needles and done just that.Local knitters and artists came together on Saturday and splashed a bit of colour around the town as part of a craze known as yarn bombing.Yarn bombing is a new fad that began in the US and has quickly spread around the world, with Saturday marking the first International Yarn Bombing Day.It involves street artists decorating parts of cities with knitted items. The Olympic Rings at Lake Wendouree, busts along the Prime Ministers Avenue in the Botanical Gardens, poles along Camp Street and a number of trees, benches and parking metres in the centre of town were all colourfully decorated on Saturday.Ballarat Yarn Bomber Steph Wallace said the movement was similar to graffiti, although it “beautified the landscape” and was easily removed. And that proved to be the case, with much of the street art removed within a matter of hours. But Ms Wallace was not worried that it was removed, as it showed people were taking some sort of interest.“I think it cheers a lot of people up to see things like that. Especially with the cold in Ballarat, a bit of wool helps brighten the day,” she said.“People shouldn’t be offended by it, it can easily be removed. It’s all about people interacting and getting together for the love of knitting.”Ms Wallace said she hoped it was something that would catch on in the future and she welcomed any interested people to join in.
