Ballarat puts out the welcome wagon for bicycle racing fans

MORE than 30 walking "information booths" will be on hand in Buninyong this weekend.Armed with local knowledge, volunteers will act as ambassadors for the Australian Open Road Cycling Championships and aid spectators, visitors and tourists around the Buninyong township."(The ambassadors) will be there to direct people to special access points (for the race) and where they can get to the shops," Ballarat City Councillor Des Hudson said."The Buninyong Lions group is co-ordinating it and it is great to see all those people who want to assist in the community this weekend."It is the first time a band of residents will be on hand to aid the championships, with more than 15,000 expected to visit Ballarat.The 30-plus army of assistants will be easily recognisable in their blue vests and will fill up to 90 shifts of the four days the championship will take place.The 2009 Scody Australian Road Cycling Championship will begin tomorrow and finish on Sunday including a rest day on Friday.
