THE Ballarat Trades & Labour Council has sacked Telstra.Council secretary Paul Clempson said the move comes after the loss of 80 contract staff from Telstra's Wendouree call centre in January."If you treat people inappropriately and expect to get away with it, then you're living in a bit of a funny world," Mr Clempson said."They (Telstra) think people don't care, but they do care."If you hand out a kicking, don't expect others to cosy up."Mr Clempson said local service providers will be used for the council's landline, internet and mobile services, and he urged other people to follow its lead."This Australian company ties us up in contracts to use their products, then turns around and takes away the livelihood and income from people we know, perhaps our friends or relations, that actually work in these areas."Well, enough is enough. If they want our business, they've got to look after their workers."In the chase for profit, it is unacceptable for Telstra to sack local people and move their work outside Australia."Individuals, businesses and community organisations should all consider the ramifications of Telstra's actions."The 80 sacked workers were employed through Dorothy Farmer Personnel, which contracts staff to Telstra.Mr Clempson said Telstra was no longer the "force they once were" and people now had other options for their telecommunication services."I strongly urge businesses in these areas to think about who supports your enterprise. People with jobs have more disposable income than those not working."Telstra spokeswoman Karina Keisler yesterday said they were disappointed to lose a customer and would speak with Mr Clempson to explain the reasons behind their "difficult decision".
