THE second-placed candidate in the Moorabool Shire Bungal ward election will not dispute the result, despite a ballot paper mix-up.Brian Meadows yesterday told The Courier he would not launch a formal challenge into the election, which he lost to Cr Philip Flack by just 12 votes. It emerged this week that some Bungal voters were sent ballot papers marked for the Hepburn Shire's Birch ward. Meanwhile, the VEC is satisfied the mistake would not have affected the election result. A report by the commission revealed a total of 64 voters in the shire's Bungal ward were mistakenly mailed ballot papers marked for the Hepburn Shire's Birch ward. The ballot papers both featured three candidates and were both coloured pink.VEC spokeswoman Sue Lang said prior to the election, 23 voters had contacted the commission to say they had received the wrong paper. "But when we opened up all the ballot papers after the close of the election, there were actually 41 incorrect papers received from the other electors within Bungal ward," Ms Lang said. Of these, 11 were informal votes, while the remainder were evenly spread between the three candidates on the paper."We think that even if they had been correct it would not have affected the result." The Courier understands some of the wrong ballot papers were mailed to the residents in the Elaine area.
