Call to end Rainbow Serpent Festival after son's drug death

30 Jan, 2012 11:44 PM

“MUM I have taken some very bad acid and everything is very odd here.”

These were some of the last words that 34-year-old Daniel Buccianti spoke to his mother, Adriana, from the Rainbow Serpent Festival in Beaufort.

A few hours later, in the early hours of Sunday morning, the Epping man was dead.

The four-day international music festival, which concluded yesterday, is synonymous in some circles for its rampant drug scene.

On Saturday night, a 25-year-old was also taken to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

However, Victoria police yesterday told The Courier no drugs were found at the festival.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Mr Buccianti’s death was not believed to be suspicious.

“Drugs took my son,” Ms Buccianti said. “He rang here that Saturday night at 6.15pm ... and said Mum I have taken some very bad acid.

“I said Daniel don’t worry, you need to get yourself to St John Hospital really quickly.”

Mr Buccianti asked his mother to come and pick him up but 40-minutes later he called again to say he was fine.

The next thing Ms Buccianti heard was a knock on the door on Sunday morning from the police informing her about her son’s death.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man was already dead when emergency crew arrived at the scene.

Ms Buccianti said she held the festival organisers responsible for her son’s death.

“They should be shut down,” she said.

“If the police didn’t find any drugs at the festival then they were not looking hard enough.”

Victoria Police Acting Senior Sergeant Jo Stafford said the festival was a privately run event and organisers were responsible for providing their own security.

“Victoria Police ensures there is a police presence at the festival to respond in the event that an incident occurs,” she said.

“This includes active patrols within the festival grounds and breath testing and traffic enforcement outside the event.”

Three people, he said, were ejected from the event due to behavioural-related incidents.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stafford said as the matter was now before the Coroner, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

Meanwhile, members of the small but tight-knit Buccianti family gathered at an Epping residence yesterday.

Candles burnt in front of Mr Buccianti’s photo at a makeshift alter in the kitchen.

Just 10-days ago, the family was celebrating his birthday.

Ms Buccianti said her son was hard-working, likeable but sometimes cheeky. A single mother, Daniel, she said had been her strength.

“My life has changed forever,” Ms Buccianti said.

“There’s never going to be another birthday, or Christmas, or wedding or grandchildren.”

Mr Buccianti will be buried in the family plot at the Carlton cemetery where his great-grandmother, grandmother and niece also rest.

Rainbow Serpent Festival organisers were not able to be contacted for comment yesterday.

All my sympathies to the family and their loss, but is it really neccessary to shut down a whole festival because of one person, I would understand if say 50 people had overdosed maybe even 20 but only 1 out of all the festival goers is not really a reason to shut it down, I have been to the Rainbow festival and had an absolutely wonderful time, yes many people there were on drugs but I restrained myself as that is not who I am, I do believe that we all know the risks involved and if we choose to participate there is no one to blame but ourselves

I feel sorry for any parent, who loses their child to drug overdoses, but the fact is was this young man forced in to taken drugs, or was it his own doing.? I feel that Police should conduct more searches if this is the case, and bring in sniffer dogs as well. But to request this festival to shut down is not fair on the other non drug users. I'm truly sorry if i have offended you Ms Buccianti, and really feel for your loss., as their is no place in Society for drugs.

It is a terrible tragedy for a Mum to lose a child. It is about time people in this world took resposibility for their own actions and stopped trying to blame others, and sueing others for actions done or caused by themselves.

Deepest Sympathy to the family and I know the mother is Grieving. It's sad that drugs are the issue they are but people take them of their own accord and know the risks.

i feel for this ladies loss but really her son would have known what he was getting into if he took acid why punish people who go to these events that dont do drugs to get a buzz?

i dont touch drugs, just because they are at a festival doesnt mean you have to take them.

I am very sorry to the family for their loss but lets not forget he was a grown man of 34 who made his own choices about drugs. It was a bad decision that cost him his life this time. This should not cause the demise of the festival.

It's not the festival organisers fault if he chose to take drugs. There is one word - NO! Stop blaming others for the incorrect decisions your sons/daughters may make. I understand her grief, but if he took the drugs he consciously made that decision. We are all responsible for our own actions.

Whilst my sympathies are with Ms Buccianti for the loss of her son, blaming a music festival for the death of her son because he ingested acid of his own free will isn't right, nor is calling for it to be shut down, which isn't fair to those who are drug-free and enjoying the music and atmosphere.
