Camp St assault victim dies in hospital

A Ballarat man who was allegedly assaulted in the inner city last weekend has died in hospital. Police confirmed that Rhys Marshall, 22, passed away this morning at the Alfred Hospital. Mr Marshall was allegedly assaulted by a teenager in Alfred Deakin Place between Camp St and Police Lane about 1am last Sunday. Digby Gram, 19, is accused of hitting Mr Marshall causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on concrete. A court heard on Tuesday that Mr Marshall and a friend had been walking through Police Lane last Sunday when they heard Gram arguing with his girlfriend and thought she required help. A short conversation took place before the alleged assault. The court had heard Gram had no recollection of the incident when interviewed by police. Gram has been charged with one count of recklessly causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury and unlawful assault. He was bailed to re-appear in Ballarat Magistrates Court on July 23.
