Dredging of Lake Wendouree to begin soon

Dredging of Lake Wendouree to begin soon

10 Sep, 2010 11:16 PM
DREDGING will begin at Lake Wendouree in just over a week.

The tender for dredging was awarded to Austco Environmental Pty Ltd yesterday, with works expected to begin on Monday, September 20.

The project will deepen 1750 metres of the rowing course by five metres.

The sediment excavated from the bed of the lake will be deposited within two of the existing reed beds to create permanent shallow wetlands.

The wetlands will provide a habitat for many of the plant and bird species that have recently returned to the lake.

Austco Environmental managing director Cole Harvey said his company was pleased to be awarded the tender.

The dredging company specialises in water treatment solutions and has completed similar projects in Hamilton and the Murray Goulburn Lagoon.

''As a group, we're ecstatic to be working with the Ballarat City Council on this project,'' he said.

``We just want to get people back on the lake and enjoying it.''

The project is expected to take eight months and will result in the lake once again being of national rowing competition standard.

Ballarat Rowing Association president Eric Waller said the prospect of competitive rowing on the lake was becoming a reality.

''We've got a possibility of a lot of quality rowers coming down here and training and competing.''

Dredging occurred when the lake was dry, but council deemed it was too dangerous to continue.

The city's acting director development and infrastructure Ian Rossiter said the $1.2 million project would move more than 100,000 cubic metres of sediment from the bottom of the lake.

Meanwhile, the FISA announcement as to whether Lake Wendouree will host the 2014 FISA World Rowing Masters Championships is expected in coming months.

The lake has been dry for years as soon as we get it full the decide to spend money on deepening it? How much more money has now been waste on this delayed decision?

How about a couple of islands where birds can be safe from predators. Maybe one for visiting and one as a reserve.

Will this flood Wendouree and Alfredton? There are subterranian connections between the lake and the two commons (ballaarat and wendouree). I am pretty sure that when the lake was first created from Yuille swamp they plugged the links with Clay, so when you dig deep, guess whats going to happen? This was the reason why they had the weed cut at ridiculous cost every year rather than pulling most of the weed up. I hope the council is very well insured! The ratepayers should not have to pay for this bungle.

I have heard some ridiculous things from the Ballarat City Council over the years...but this takes the cake. Its just another example of the BCC not being able to make the right decisions, and wasting rate payers money. The lake has been empty for 4-5 years, and there was much talk about deepening the rowing course while it was dry. There were offers from earthmoving companies to deepen the lake for next to nothing, if they could keep the soil. But no... it seems the BCC where unable to make a decision, and now are unconcerned that the dredging will pollute the fresh clean lake with silt, and waste $1.2M of rate payers money (which gauging by other past projects, will probably cost much more) Wake up to yourself Ballarat City Council... the lake has never looked so good and clean... and the money could be better spent elsewhere in the community.

The council told us while the lake was dry they couldn't do any deepening as the lake would leak and it would an environmental issue. Now when it suits them they change their mind. Sadly we all knew this would happen. I guess it helps justify the rate increases...

Cade... Spot on,,, Lake looks great... Another fact. No fish can be stocked into the lake until several months after the dredging due to the silt. So one group misses out for the benefit of another. I guess benefiting locals with some fishing is not as important as "Possibly" getting a rowing event.... Why spend the money on a maybe.. The rowers should be happy to have a place to train...

Well said Cade! My thoughts exactly. Disgusting waste of money.

As a resident what benefit do I get out of increased tourism, it is the business men and women who live around the lake who get the money so why not get them to pay to dredge it and spend the money on roads such as Pleasant st where the bitumen above the Redan wetlands pilpeline is collapsing or Barlky st between Cobden and Gladstone or the exit between Safeway and Coles in Eastwood st or even the carpark at the library or many other roads around town.
