EUREKA _-Ballarat gold specialist Cordell Kent has secured a gold nugget so rare it has taken his breath away.
Mr Kent, who runs The Mining Exchange Gold Shop, bought the nugget from a Ballarat prospector.
Mr Kent said the "super, super, super rare" nugget was a world-class specimen of crystalised gold.
"In more than 15 years as dealer I've never seen anything like it," he said.
"It's mother nature at its best. Any museum in the world would want it."
The discovery coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Eureka uprising, when gold miners protested against high mining licence fees.
Mr Kent was keen to secure the nugget to keep it in Ballarat.
He plans to display the nugget in The Mining Exchange Gold Shop until the end of the year.
"I've seen a lot of gold in my time, but that takes my breath away," he said.
"We will have it our for people to see. I don't expect to see another one."
Mr Kent said gold experts were divided on how crystalised nuggets form.
The nugget was found in quartz on a mullock heap just north of Ballarat, and carefully extracted.
Mr Kent said there were about 15 forms of gold crystal, and this was the rarest.
The prospector who found the nugget wishes to remain anonymous.
