Heroes recognised for bravery in accident rescue

"HERO." Kevin Harty never thought the word would apply to him.But yesterday the humble Ballarat man received a Citizen's Commendation from Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland.Last November, Mr Harty was driving to Minyip he saw a car veer off the road into the bush. Meanwhile, off-duty police officer Senior Constable Adam Rabone was travelling behind the vehicle and witnessed the incident.Snr Const Rabone stopped his vehicle and ran towards the accident scene.Mr Harty did a U-turn and also ran towards the scene.With some difficulty, the pair managed to free the driver from the burning wreck and pull him to safety.The response was "instinct", Mr Harty said, despite the fear in the back of his mind that the car might explode at any moment."I am very honoured to receive a bravery award," he said.His wife, mother and two children attended the service at a graduation ceremony at the Police Academy in Glen Waverley yesterday."The courage and professionalism displayed by these men was outstanding," Mr Overland said.Sen Const Rabone received a Highly Commended Certificate, which is awarded for a particular incident involving either an act of conspicuous courage or exemplary service.Mr Harty receive a Citizens Commendation, which is awarded to a community member who has performed a conspicuous act of bravery or provided exemplary service in connection with Victoria Police operations or for the community.
