Hotel boss on drug charges

THE manager of the Lake View Hotel has been charged as part of a major drug trafficking bust.Michael Cooke, 36, was arrested at the hotel following a raid on the historic property.The hotel's chef Anthony Grant, 35, was also arrested.The pair are facing various charges, including trafficking the party drug amphetamine, possessing amphetamine and conspiracy to trafficking amphetamine.Mr Cooke has also been charged with handling stolen goods and storing unauthorised explosives without approval.Police swooped on the Wendouree Pde hotel, owned by Mr Cooke's parents, on Thursday afternoon after the pair were linked to what police described as a "prolific drug trafficking ring" in Melbourne's northern suburbs.Ten other warrants were executed on homes in Port Melbourne, Ardeer, Delahey, Reservoir, Northcote and Epping as part of the investigation, dubbed Operation Sacred.Members of Ballarat's Regional Response Unit and Criminal Investigation Unit carried out the raid with the help of prison dogs about 2.15pm.Items that will be used as evidence, were seized from the hotel.A large amount of cash, stolen property and two cars, including a BMW, were seized from the Melbourne properties.Police said they were surprised by the amount and quality of the amphetamines seized, describing it as "superior to the usual".Three other people were arrested on Thursday and police expect further arrests to be made.A 52-year-old Reservoir man faced Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of amphetamines and possessing proceeds of crime.A 34-year-old Reservoir woman and a 35-year-old Preston man were charged and bailed to appear at court a later date.Ballarat Regional Response Unit Sergeant Steven Howard said the operation had netted a "good result".Mr Cooke and Mr Grant have been bailed to appear at Ballarat Magistrates Court on February 11.
