Lake Wendouree named Australian venue in world bid

23 Aug, 2010 11:13 PM
BALLARAT has taken another step in re-establishing itself on rowing's world stage, with the announcement it has been elected as the Australian venue in the bid for an international event.

Lake Wendouree has been named as the Australian venue to host the 2014 FISA World Rowing Masters Championships.

It is not yet known how many other countries it will have to compete against, but it is thought to be less than 10.

FISA representatives from Bulgaria and South Africa inspected Ballarat yesterday and will report their findings back to the Masters commission.

FISA events co-ordinator Colleen Orsmond, from South Africa, said the enthusiasm shown by people in Ballarat would go a long way in aiding the bid.

"The enthusiasm of the people is extreme, which is always good," she said.

Ms Orsmond added the main aim of the visit was to view not only the rowing course, but the facilities of Ballarat as a whole.

Rowing Australia national development and events director Matt Draper said he was excited for Lake Wendouree to be the Australian bidding venue for the championships.

"When we heard there was water in the lake we wanted to see how serious this city was. We're really excited," he said.

The lake's water levels have risen dramatically in the last month, and Ballarat mayor Judy Verlin said the timing of the FISA visit was ideal.

"The visit has come at the right time for us to showcase the lake and our city. To have them here first-hand is critically important. Ballarat is ready to host an event of this stature."

The event would be the largest held in Ballarat since 2002, when the Melbourne World Masters Games Rowing Regatta was held, attracting more than 10,000 people.

The final decision will be made later this year.

Whatever can be done to create profile and assist associated businesses in Ballarat (which appear to be struggling) with the spin offs accom, food, drink, activity from having visitors who stay more than a day can only be good for all of us. We haven't got the coast, so let's work what we have got. Ballarat has become so very quiet now. Contrary to some opinions, the loss of lake activity/events is directly associated with the decline in visitors/incidental events to our whoe city's hearbeat.

Now we can't have the facts getting in the way of a good story, can we? Ballarat has been giving the opportunity to BID for the event, that is all. There will be seriousl tough competition. Secondly, the 2002 World Masters Rowing DID NOT attract 10,000 people. There were 1700 participants in the four day event (and maybe another 500 in support), with many staying for only two days. I'm all for bringing events to Ballarat, but let us not try to re-write history and put our own spin on the realities of the situation.

cost to fill lake with drinking water $1,000,000 not including all the works etc... revenue from this event in three years time from less than ten countries - pittance! It will prob need refilling three more times before the event begins! (that is if we are successful. All these rowers harping on about how vital the lake is too them and how much $$$ it will bring to the area, lol - what a joke. Meanwhile, roads and BASIC council services continue deteriorating

Absolutely 100% correct kak. Let's get Ballarats roads, parks, footpaths, and everything else that's been neglected for years by the council and the Victorian Labour Government back in order before spending large amounts on the privilaged ones around the lake. How about some speed humps in streets other than Webster St. and Gregory St. Get ready for the big Labour splurge that's about to happen now that they've seen what's happened to the Feds last weekend. Too late Brumby. You're finished.

Agree Kak, about time the council started spending rates payers money to benifit rates payers not a select few visitors and business.
