Mars Ballarat workers agree to new EBA

25 Feb, 2012 12:29 AM
A MAJORITY of Mars Chocolate Australia workers at the company’s Ballarat site have voted to accept the proposed enterprise bargaining agreement.

Sixty-two per cent of employees (153 to 94) voted in favour of accepting the agreement, seemingly putting an end to 10 months of negotiations with the two unions covering the site, the AMWU and the ETU.

The company says it took the EBA vote to employees directly because “the majority wanted to finalise the EBA as soon as possible and did not want to take further industrial action”.

Mars acting general manager Andrew Loader said the vote result was great news for the company.

“Ballarat has been our home for more than 30 years and we are committed to being here for the long term,” he said.

“However, union demands for things such as five weeks of paid leave do not reflect the pressure on our business to operate in a globally competitive environment.

“We can now all get on with the business of making chocolate.”

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union representative Colin Muir said the vote was more like “50-50” because of a substantial vote by non-union members.

Mr Muir also said he would raise questions of an illegal vote with union members at an upcoming meeting.

“We have concerns about the legality of the vote,” he said.

“What we do about those concerns will be discussed at a meeting on Monday.”

However, Mr Loader said there was nothing illegal about the recent vote.

“We followed the process to the letter and used the Australian Electoral Commission to conduct the vote,” he said.

OK...the people have now voted, regardless whether they are union or non union members, they are all workers at Mars and majority of workers are happy to accept the offer and in the end keep their jobs. Colin Muir and the union just need to butt out now and stop disrupting workplaces and putting peoples jobs at risk! Good on Mars for committing to the Ballarat region for the long term because if it didn't it would be disaster for many families and Ballarat.

50:50? Colin Muir pls remember that the agreement is for ALL associates. Go away... You already caused enough damage, you are just showing how much this is about your ego, versus representing the best interest of associates!

The EBA affects all employees not just the union members so they should all be allowed to vote, Colin.

colin muir obviously thinks the aec is biased and that only union members should vote on eba agreements that impact on all workers union and non union

Mr Muir. I support the purpose of unionism but gee, if the union don't stop the strong arm tactics and power-mongering they will be the cause of their own demise. Most workers are happy so leave it alone. Start listening to the employees you represent and stop telling them what the union wants. We don't need strong arm tactics anymore. Unions really need to have a look at the way they conduct themselves and assess who's interests they are really representing.

Good oh, just shows not all emplyees are union minded. To have a job is more inportant than trying to bring down the firm and force them to leave Ballarat and leave us with nothing. youv'e lost this one muir, now back off and leave the men in peace.

What a monumental waste of time, money, paper and legal resources this whole event has been for reasons even the people involved aren't too sure on. And now Col's not happy because it was too fair, with everyone involved getting a vote-what a joke. Go back to Melbourne Col and take the horse you rode in on with you.

Almost 40% of workers didn't agree with the EBA? Hope you're paying attention Mars Management and take note that things are not well within your company.

Why the Mars family put up with this i will never know, keep it up and they will turn off the lights and tell the last to leave to lock the gate, then where will your groceries come from?
