Maternity reforms: protest group awaits PM's arrival

PROTESTERS waving pro-home birth signs gathered outside the Town Hall waiting for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to arrive this morning. But when Mr Rudd had not arrived by about 11am, the group decided to move to the Ballarat Botanic Gardens where his bronze bust awaits at Prime Minister's Avenue. About 60 women with babies and children gathered in support of home birth. Maternity advocate and organiser Justine Caines said the women were protesting against an amendment to a senate bill that would require formal agreements between midwives and doctors. ''With these bills now in the Senate, Prime Minister Rudd has agreed to an 11th hour amendment to prevent midwifery practice and women making decisions in childbirth unless formal agreement from a doctor is sought,'' she said.''Without a formal midwives will not be able to practice, and women will be denied a fundamental right to make decisions about their bodies.''
