Rally to call for independent inquiry into church sex abuses

A RALLY will be held on the steps of Parliament House tomorrow, to call on the state government to hold an independent inquiry into sexual assault and the Catholic Church.Lawyer Judy Courtin has organised the rally, which is expected to be attended by victims of sexual assault and their friends and family.Speaking to The Courier yesterday, Ms Courtin called on the friends and family of those who had committed suicide in the years following sexual abuse, to attend.“We’re asking any families that have had a family member suicide in the years following clergy abuse, for them to bring a photograph of that person,” Ms Courtin said.At least 26 people are known to have committed suicide after being sexually abused by clergy in Ballarat. Ms Courtin said she believed that number had risen to 35 in the last few months.Ms Courtin said protesters were also calling for all Catholic clergy abuse-related cases of suicide to be handed over to the State Coroner.
