PROBLEMS with limited police resources in rural Victorian must immediately be addressed, according to opposition spokesman on police Peter Ryan.Mr Ryan said the people at Lexton in particular had been suffering in recent years. The country community remains without a permanent police presence, but is partolled by a Beaufort-based officer.Mr Ryan said the state government needed to act so that rural Victorian communities such as Lexton could live with peace of mind."The lack of a permanent police officer is understandably causing concern and anger in the community," Mr Ryan said.Karl Liebich, spokesman for the minister for small business and agriculture Joe Helper, said the placement of officers around Victoria was not a state government issue."The state government isn't responsible for the individual placement of its officers," Mr Liebich said."Its jurisdiction begins and ends with the recruitment and training of new police and equipment."Victoria Police is solely responsoble for deciding where the operation placement of police occurs."Within Australia, Victoria currently has the lowest number of frontline police officers per person. In April, nearly 2000 extra officers were announced to be deployed around the state, with 604 to be patrolling the streets by mid next year.Police Association secretary Greg Davies said even though he hadn't heard of any issues arising from the lack of police resources in Lexton, it was still an issue of concern."The laws of the land are only as good as the people there to enforce them, and if there is no-one there to enforce the laws then some people start to do as they like," Mr Davies said. But Mr Davies said the chief commissioner was the only person who could dictate where resources were to be allocated.
